Fed: New business standards call for whistleblower protection

CANBERRA, Jan 15 AAP - Whistleblowers would be protected and companies urged to developa social conscience under draft corporate governance guidelines released for public commenttoday.

Standards Australia said the guidelines, released amid controversy about inadequatecorporate controls at HIH, would help restore investor confidence and help companies bettermanage their affairs.

Lawyers for the HIH Royal Commission have identified more than 1,000 breaches of thelaw in the lead-up to the insurance giant's collapse in March 2001, with an estimated$5.3 billion in debts.
