SA: Asthma sufferers endure anxiety, depression, conference told
A conference has been told people with asthma suffer increased behavioural problems,anxiety and depression.
The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand's annual scientific meeting has heardthe psychological distress often results from poor medication management.
CHRISTOPHER BARTON, of Monash University's department of epidemiology and preventivemedicine, has told the meeting in Adelaide that anxiety and depression could affect between30 and 50 per cent of severe asthma sufferers.
He says people with asthma tend to use different strategies for coping with stressthan individuals with other chronic illness.
He says those who go to hospital emergency departments for asthma or suffer near-fatalattacks often haven't kept up their medication properly.
And other severe asthma sufferers use alcohol to cope with anxiety and depression whilesome also deny the condition exists.
